Umpire Communication Cards: What You Need to Know

Umpire Communication Cards are a tool used to help officials manage situations on the field and communicate clearly during games.

While umpires are trained on how to use these cards, it’s important that coaches, players, and parents understand what they are and what they mean when used in a game setting.

The communication cards support umpires in a few key ways:

  • Pre-game plate meetings: Providing a consistent script to guide conversations with coaches
  • Addressing disrespectful behaviour: Offering clear language to respond calmly and professionally
  • Non-verbal signaling: Allowing umpires to hold up the card to indicate discomfort and signal that behaviour needs to stop

Not all umpires—especially those newer to officiating—will feel confident addressing situations directly. These cards help provide support in those moments and allow umpires to manage situations in a clear and consistent way.

If a red card is used during a game, it may be followed by a formal report and could lead to further review depending on the situation.

Coaches are encouraged to ensure their players and parents understand the purpose of the cards. Creating a respectful environment for officials is a shared responsibility across the game.

By supporting our umpires, we help strengthen softball for everyone involved.
